The Acid Attack on Andrie Yunus: A Threat to Democracy in Indonesia
Andrie Yunus, a prominent Indonesian human rights activist, was the victim of a brutal acid attack that left him with severe burns covering 24% of his body. The incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for a thorough investigation, as it highlights growing fears about the erosion of democratic values in the country.
The attack occurred late on Thursday in Jakarta when Andrie, who serves as deputy coordinator of the KontraS rights group, was riding a motorbike. Two men on a scooter approached him, and one of them hurled acid at him, causing serious injuries to his face, an eye, hands, and chest. According to Dimas Bagus Arya, a coordinator at KontraS, both attackers concealed their faces during the attack.
This incident has raised alarm among human rights organizations and officials, who see it as an attempt to silence critical voices in society. “We view this acid attack as an attempt to silence critical voices in society,” said Dimas. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, expressed deep concern over the “horrific acid attack.” He emphasized that those responsible must be held accountable and called for the protection of human rights defenders.
Andrie has long been a vocal critic of efforts to increase the military’s influence in the Indonesian government. In fact, he had just finished recording a podcast on the topic when he was attacked. His activism has made him a target, as he has previously received threats for his work.
Calls for Justice and Accountability
Dimas urged the police to quickly identify the perpetrators and determine the motives behind the attack. Jakarta police spokesperson Budi Hermanto confirmed that an investigation has been launched. The case has also drawn attention from international human rights bodies. UN special rapporteur on human rights defenders Mary Lawlor called for a thorough probe, stating that impunity for violence against activists is “unacceptable.”
Indonesia’s Minister for Law and Human Rights, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, described the incident as “an attack on democracy” and pledged that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. “Acts of violence like this must not be tolerated. Whoever the perpetrators are, whatever their motive, [they] must be prosecuted according to the law,” Yusril said in a statement.
Democratic Backsliding in Indonesia
The attack comes amid growing concerns about democratic backsliding in Indonesia. In its latest report on Southeast Asia’s largest economy, Human Rights Watch highlighted that under President Prabowo Subianto, an ex-general who took office in 2024, the country has seen further democratic decline, including crackdowns on protests, media censorship, and intimidation of activists.
This context makes the attack on Andrie even more alarming. It underscores the risks faced by those who speak out against government policies and the need for stronger protections for human rights defenders.
The Role of International Bodies
The international community has also voiced its concern. The United Nations has repeatedly called for the protection of human rights activists, emphasizing that they play a crucial role in holding governments accountable. The incident has added urgency to these calls, as it demonstrates the dangers faced by those who challenge power structures.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring that justice is served and that such attacks do not go unpunished. The case of Andrie Yunus serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by activists in Indonesia and the importance of safeguarding democratic values.
