Identification of Tourist’s Remains in Bali
The remains of a Ukrainian tourist, identified as Igor Komarov, 28, have been confirmed to be those of a man who was kidnapped and last seen pleading for help in a ransom video. The gruesome discovery of severed body parts on a beach in Bali has led to an ongoing investigation by the police.
Komarov was allegedly taken by a group of men while riding a scooter in Jimbaran, Badung, on February 15. His disappearance sparked widespread concern, especially after a distressing video surfaced online showing him bruised and tearful, begging for his parents’ help.
Discovery of Human Remains
Last week, human remains were discovered at the mouth of Wos River in Bali’s lower east coast. Police reported that these remains had an up to 80 per cent similarity with Komarov. The recovered parts included a head, right leg, upper chest sections, thighs, and internal organs from someone who had died three days prior.
On Friday, authorities confirmed that the body parts matched Komarov after forensic evidence was compared with samples from his parents. Bali Police Senior Commissioner Ariasandy stated that DNA tests conducted by the police forensic laboratory in Jakarta involved six samples obtained from the body parts.
These samples included a molar tooth, a collarbone, a fragment of the thigh bone (femur), a rib bone, a toe bone, and a fragment of the shin bone. “The DNA tests match with the DNA sample from [Komarov’s] mother. Based on this, we found that the body parts were identical to the victim.”
The Ransom Video
Before he went missing, Komarov was seen posing beside his girlfriend, Yeva Mishalova, a glamorous influencer, in loving social media posts. The couple shared a photo captioned, “F*** 14 February, love you everyday,” which was posted on Valentine’s Day and shared with nearly 200,000 followers.
Officials have suggested that their romantic posts may have revealed their location to the kidnappers. After his abduction, a haunting video emerged online showing a bruised and tearful Komarov begging his parents for help. He appeared to be missing a hand and had two black eyes.
“I’ve already had some of my limbs chopped off, I have broken legs and a punched ribcage. I’m already on meds, I already have no limbs,” he said through tears. “Mummy, Daddy, I beg you, help me please, you stole those ten million, which they ask for, return these ten million please. An infection will start soon. I’m just dying… I ask you very much, this is a very serious organisation, please help me, no one can find me, neither mafiosos, no one.”
Investigation into the Abduction
There has been no confirmation from Balinese investigators regarding the identity of the kidnappers. The Daily Mail has not been able to verify the original video. During police investigations into Komarov’s disappearance, GPS data from a rented minibus led investigators to a villa in Tabanan, where they suspect the ‘ransom’ video was recorded.
Senior Commissioner Ariasandy mentioned that blood found in the villa and the minibus was also identical to Komarov’s DNA. Detectives are also understood to have found a phone and bag belonging to Komarov at the villa.
A Nigerian man, referred to as ‘CH’, was arrested on Monday in West Nusa Tenggara after allegedly renting the car from which police found the GPS data. He allegedly also used a fake Belgian passport. However, the senior commissioner said he was “not directly involved in the [alleged] kidnapping.”
Ongoing Search for Suspects
Police said they continue to hunt for six other suspects—identified last week as RM, BK, AS, VN, SM, and DH. Four of them are believed to have fled Bali. The case remains under active investigation, with authorities working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
